Colours to choose (and avoid)
Avoid pure red, heavy maroon-gold, and bridal-adjacent colour combinations traditionally reserved for the bride in most Indian wedding contexts.
Jewel tones — deep blue, emerald, mustard — and classic white/pastel chikankari are both safe, elegant guest choices across most functions.
Dress for the specific function
Daytime functions (haldi, mehendi) → lighter fabrics like cotton or georgette in brighter colours suit outdoor, daytime settings.
Evening functions (sangeet, reception) → richer fabric with named embroidery techniques (jaali, mukesh) photographs better under evening/indoor lighting.
Layer with a dupatta
A dupatta instantly elevates a kurta set for a wedding function, and can be draped differently across events — over one shoulder for day functions, more structured for evening.
